Social DRM: eBook watermarking explained

Social DRM means every buyer gets a copy of the eBook with their own details in it, instead of a file locked to an account. The book opens on any device, and a shared copy can be traced back to its order.

Updated:

In one sentence: Social DRM, also called watermarking or soft DRM, personalises each copy with the buyer’s name or order so that sharing is visible and traceable, without passwords or special apps.

How does social DRM work?

When someone buys, the shop creates a new copy of the file. A visible note names the buyer, for example “This copy was made for Alex Sample, order #1001”. Many services also add an identifier you cannot see, so the copy stays traceable if the visible note is removed. Pageseal does both, for EPUB, PDF and audiobooks.

Social DRM or encryption DRM?

Does social DRM stop piracy?

No protection stops a determined person. What social DRM changes is the motive: few buyers share a file with their own name in it, and if a copy turns up on a file-sharing site, you know which order it came from and can act, for example block that copy or ask the site to take it down.

What should a good eBook watermark do?

  • Keep the book intact on every reader, including fixed-layout picture books.
  • Show the buyer’s name in a calm, respectful way (no shouting banners).
  • Carry a second, hidden identifier that survives if the note page is deleted.
  • Let you look up a found file yourself, without emailing a support team.
  • Work for all formats you sell: EPUB, PDF and audiobooks.

Do I need to tell buyers about the watermark?

Yes, say it in the product description, for example “Your copy is personalised with your name and order number.” It sets expectations and is part of being open about how you use buyer data; your privacy policy should mention it, too. Pageseal processes buyer data as your processor under a data processing agreement, on servers in Germany (security and GDPR).

Questions

Asked often.

What is the difference between social DRM and a watermark?

None in practice. Social DRM is the name for personalising each copy with buyer details; the personal note is often called a watermark.

Can a social DRM watermark be removed?

A visible note page can be deleted. That is why Pageseal also adds a hidden identifier that stays in the file, so the leak search still finds the order.

Does social DRM work with Kindle?

Yes. A personalised EPUB can be sent to a Kindle with Amazon’s Send to Kindle, like any EPUB.

Is social DRM legal in the EU?

Personalising a copy uses the buyer’s name, which is personal data. Tell buyers about it and process it under a data processing agreement; Pageseal provides one.
